As we all know, it’s that time of year where the flowers start blooming, and our cars get covered in a layer of pollen…it’s Spring Time!
We have all been waiting for the warmer weather, and for the opportunity to be outside to enjoy Spring Time…but for some people that unfortunately means ALLERGIES! Even when we shut ourselves up inside our homes, the pollen can make its way in, landing on surfaces and settling inside of our homes. So, in order to make your allergies more controllable and your home free from pollen, we have come up with 5 ways to spring clean your home!
1…Damp Dusting
Many of us are not good about keeping up with the dusting…until it has gathered up over a long period of time, we don’t necessarily notice it laying around on all of our surfaces. While feather dusters are great, and move the dust off of the surfaces, they do not get rid of the dust. Damp dusting is a good way of trapping the dust, and allowing you to get rid of it, rather than just move it around. Find yourself a damp cloth of sponge, and make your way around your home and wipe down all surfaces.
2…Remove trapped allergens
Carpets, area rugs and upholstery do a great job of trapping in dust and allergens. It is important to stay on top of vacuuming and cleaning these things over the course of Spring. You should vacuum at least once a week, and more if you have pets, or frequently leave and enter your home from the outside. Where possible, you should also have your carpets, area rugs and upholstery professional cleaned every 3-4 months. This allows anything trapped to be removed, and freshen up your home!
3…Change your HVAC filters regularly
Change your filters every 6-12 months, and even more regularly if you find that your allergies are severe. You would be surprised at how much these filters collect over time, and the difference it can make once they have been replaced. You can find filter replacements at your local Home Depot, or even order them from Amazon!
4…Wash and Air out Bed Linens Regularly
Bedding is one of the fastest ways to collect dust, skin flakes, and other particles that dust mites love to live on. Washing your bedding once a week is ideal, and every 2 weeks is a must if you want to keep the dust and allergies out of your home. Even shaking it out several times a week will remove some of the dust from your bedding, just be sure to damp dust and vacuum afterwards!
5…Keep your home cool and dry
Throughout the Spring/Summer time, it can be especially hard to keep our homes cool and dry. But for dust mites and mold, a warm environment is their favorite. If you find your home to be humid and moist, it may be time to invest in a dehumidifier to get rid of some of that excess moisture.
With these tips, we hope that you find it easier to keep your home free from allergies and dust mites over the Spring/Summer. For more information on getting your home clean, and rid of allergens, please be sure to reach out to us for more information!
